LIGHT PAINTING – workshops of movement and image for children from 5 to 12 years.
The light painting used in the project is a newly developed video technique in which the trails of the light are digitally captured and retained in the video projection to create lasting, however ephemeral, visual experience. The video images gradually interpenetrates each other creating dynamic and unpredictable narrative. The technique introduces a connection between children’s physical movement and painting, and is a transition from 3-dimensional space into the virtual “canvas” of the video projection screen. The video images are generated under the influence of the movement. The children move according to the specific motion patterns with the LED lights attached to their bodies. A computer program tracks their movement with a camera and presents the trajectory of the moving body through the video projection. This leads to a live light painting. The workshops make use of a natural for smaller children tendency to express themselves through the movement in order to make them perform artistic activity (the act of painting). The workshops will be conducted by Michał Osowski – an interdisciplinary artist based in Netherlands and in Poland. He studied electro-acoustic music at the Institute of Sonology in the Hague and composition at the conservatory in Rotterdam, as well as interactive techniques at IRCAM in Paris. He specializes in interactive art projects integrating physical action with sound and video projection, in which the aspects of public participation/involvement and the collaborations with the artists of different disciplines play an important role. His projects are carried out e.g. in the form of workshops with school children, open sessions for spontaneous participation, or public performances when different artists are invited to perform their creative actions.
