Vintage Grand Prix III Place
The Most Beautiful Anthropocene
Scholz’s artistic odyssey commenced amidst the hallowed halls of the Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin), where he was mentored by the esteemed Dr. Anthony Haughey. It was during this formative period that Scholz’s fascination with visual narratives ignited, propelling him toward a lifelong exploration.
Later, Scholz pursued postgraduate studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London, guided by luminaries such as Turner Prize winners Dr. Elizabeth Price, Grayson Perry, Mark Leckey, and Laure Prouvost. This exposure deepened his understanding of critical contemporary art-making theories and practices, shaping his creative vision.
Scholz’s works have graced European exhibitions, leaving an indelible mark. Noteworthy among these are the Rotterdam Photo Festival 2022 XL in the Netherlands and the Rotlicht Festival for Analog Photography 2022 in Vienna, where he emerged as a joint winner. His contributions resonate in significant environmental showcases like Climanosco in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, and Extraction: Loss and Restoration in King’s Lynn, United Kingdom.
"The Most Beautiful Anthropocene" is Scholz’s ongoing series – an exploration of environmental concerns through sustainable photographic printing practices. His work transcends conventional boundaries, pushing the limits of technical precision, conceptual depth, and creative ingenuity. Rooted in a responsive approach to specific sites, Scholz delves into the intricate interplay between humans, non-humans, and nature, all against the backdrop of an emerging climate crisis.
The heart of his artistic process lies in seamlessly integrating two 19th-century Victorian and vintage photographic printing techniques: cyanotype and lumen. Using exclusively organic materials and expired photographic darkroom paper, Scholz crafts cyanolumens – distinctive images that resonate with viewers. Each site becomes a collaborative partner as he engages with elements like seawater, rain, and plant specimens. The resulting visual symphony stimulates conversations and fosters growth through meaningful engagement.
Aindreas Scholz’s roots trace back to Wiesbaden, Germany, where he was born to an Anglo-Irish mother and a Sudeten-German father. His bilingual upbringing allowed him to straddle cultural boundaries, dividing his time between Ireland and Germany. As an educator specializing in photography, Scholz imparts his passion to young minds, bridging generational gaps through visual storytelling.
His artistic contributions have found homes in prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Office of Public Works in Ireland, the NHS Foundation Trust in England, Goldsmiths College in the United Kingdom, and the esteemed collections of IBASHO Gallery and Frédéric de Goldschmidt in Belgium.
