"Hello Darkness" is a collection of photographs capturing the true, unfiltered beauty of our universe on film. It can be difficult to fathom that the detailed images of stars, galaxies, and nebulas often seen in mainstream media are real objects. The photographs of "Hello Darkness" offer a unique perspective of the cosmos, using the tangible nature of film to emphasize the presence in reality of these exquisite views. The textures and imperfections of film underscore the absoluteness of space and underplay the abstract. Vintage analog cameras were used to trap the light from these distant stars in the emulsion of photographic film. Both negative and colour positive photographic films were used in 35mm, 120, and 4x5 inch formats to create physical artifacts. The ability to touch and hold the interaction of light from these stars, having journeyed thousands of years through space to reach us, fades the margins between humans and space. Although impossible distance prevents us from traveling to these wonders of our universe, the photographs of "Hello Darkness" offer a window of connection right here on Earth.
Jason De Freitas is an accomplished Australian photographer renowned for his unique approach to imagery, characterized by a seamless fusion of analog mediums and cutting-edge technology. With a profound passion for experimentation, he pushes the boundaries of artistic expression, resulting in anachronistic and captivating visual narratives.
For the past four years, Jason has devoted his artistic vision to the realm of modern analog astrophotography, where he harnesses the tangible qualities of the medium to forge a profound and intimate connection with the cosmos. His work goes beyond mere representation, delving deep into the essence of the process, evoking a sense of immersion that resonates on a personal level.
In his most recent endeavors, Jason has seamlessly integrated analog cameras onto modern drones, culminating in a surreal juxtaposition of past and present. Through his lens, he conjures ethereal landscapes and unveils impossible vistas, imbuing each frame with a profound emotional and nostalgic resonance. By inviting viewers to embrace these uniquely curated vistas, he encourages them to embark on a journey through time, eliciting a profound reflection on the passage of eras and a renewed appreciation for the inherent beauty of the captured landscapes.
