Long time un/seen
The exhibition has been prepared based on the artistic photography collection of the Leon Wyczółkowski District Museum in Bydgoszcz on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the International Festival of Analog Photography Enthusiasts, Vintage Photo Festival. From its inception, the Bydgoszcz Museum has collected photographs as iconographic material for research on the history of the city and region. It wasn't until 1995 that artistic photography began to be collected. The collection has been developed in two main areas: works by photographers associated with our region (including Jerzy Riegel, Andrzej Maziec, Viola Kuś, Marek Noniewicz, Wojciech Woźniak, Marcin Sauter, Zbigniew Lubaczewski, Bogdan Dąbrowski) and artists from other significant Polish photography communities (including Tadeusz Wański, Józef Robakowski, Andrzej Różycki, Zofia Kulik, Natalia LL, Andrzej Lachowicz, Teresa Gierzyńska, Grzegorz Przyborek, Joanna Rajkowska, Jerzy Truszkowski, Jan Brzoska, Tomasz Dobiszewski, and the Łódź Kaliska group).
The collection includes nearly 200 objects created using various photographic techniques. It encompasses a broad thematic spectrum, from portraits, still lifes, and landscapes, to reportage and staged photography. The oldest works date back to the 1930s and represent the pictorialism movement. The collection also features larger groups of works by artists associated with the Zero-61 Group, the Film Form Workshop, as well as critical and conceptual art.
The exhibition will present dozens of works showcasing the formal and thematic diversity of the photographs collected at the Bydgoszcz Museum, which are rarely shown to the public. Titled "Long time un/seen," this is only the second presentation of the collection; the first was in 2010, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Museum of Photography at the University of Economy in Bydgoszcz. In the following years, we enriched the collection with new acquisitions and deposits, some of which will be presented in our city for the first time.
