"The Un/bearable Lightness of Being"

Slideshow presentation

Private albums are usually full of sincerity. They naturally showcase both ordinary everyday life and exceptional moments that we want to capture and preserve for longer. "The Un/bearable Lightness of Being" is a collection of family and amateur photographs that straightforwardly display joy, happiness, love, friendship, and the beauty that emerges from spending time together.

The slideshow consists of vernacular photographs from the years 1900-1990, gathered in the online Fortepan archive, which currently contains over 180,000 images. The photographs are voluntarily contributed by private individuals and institutions, and anyone can view, download, and use them for any purpose, free of charge. In this way, a communal archive is created, collecting photographs from private collections of residents from various corners of Europe. The project was initiated in Budapest in 2010 and has recently been joined by the Fotofestiwal in Łódź.

If you have old photos and wish to participate in the Fortepan project, please write to: archiwum@fotofestiwal.com
